A fictional tale of 7th grader Sarah Tucker in the late 70's who joins the East High girls cross country team because there were no sports programs for girls in junior high. At the first fall practice Sarah discovers two things no one mentioned — the team has only one other girl and they have to train alongside the boys. The story follows the ups and downs of her prep career against the backdrop of Title IX, describing the obstacles and pitfalls faced during the initial years. By her freshmen year of high school Sarah is one of the top distance runners in the state. Along the way she faces the loss of a close friend and a crushing defeat that almost ends her career, ultimately rewarded with an opportunity she never thought possible.
